It's time to find out what the Genshin Impact sequel is about.
The free-to-play activity in Hoyoverse follows from Genshin Impact is a game with virtually identical combat but a completely different structure and setting. Zenless Zone Zero (opens in new tab) is an anime action game in which you acquire characters (probably with gacha systems to be disclosed later), but it's a room-based roguelike rather than an open world game.
The first closed beta for Zenless Zone Zero began today, and we already see a lot of genuine gameplay from gamers that were asked to participate.
The game is set in New Eridu, a futuristic urban city, where your trio of anime characters enters Hollows, or corrupted holes in the earth, to combat monsters. The notion for the game's roguelike structure, in which you take on quests and traverse a grid of television displays, is quite straightforward. As you light up more and more and eventually leap into an arena to battle off adversaries, each screen gives randomized benefits and decisions to make. The difficulty grows as you progress, but if you fail, you get to keep some special enhancements for your crew for the following round.
Like most Hoyoverse games, battle in Zenless Zone Zero demands you to switch between your three characters while performing combination attacks and special powers. Unlike in Genshin, they can attack together as you shift back and forth, whereas Genshin only allows passive ability interactions. The battles are far more visually appealing, with dynamic, close-up images of the action and the option to avoid blows and activate a slow-mo mode.
