GTA 6 is still years away.
Rockstar Games is hard at work on the next Grand Theft Auto game, which may feature a Latina woman in Vice City, but when will the follow-up to the massively successful GTA V be released?
Officially, neither Rockstar Games nor parent company Take-Two has announced a release date for GTA 6, nor have they provided a time frame or any other indication of when the game might be released. According to some analysts, the game could be released during Take-fiscal Two's year 2024, which runs from April 2023 to March 2024.
Bloomberg reports that GTA 6 has been in development "in some form" since 2014, just a year after GTA V was released in 2013. Rockstar Games confirmed in February this year that GTA 6 was in production and development was "well underway." Rockstar Games has recently posted dozens of new job openings, indicating that production on the game is ramping up.
According to the report, development on the title is moving more slowly than some developers anticipated. According to the report, the pandemic caused production delays, but another factor causing the slower development was changes at Rockstar to help improve culture and working conditions. Furthermore, the design department was said to have been restructured in order to help employees avoid excessive overtime.
Earlier in 2022, a group of GTA 6 designers at Rockstar's Edinburgh office quit over concerns about the game's "lack of progress," according to Bloomberg.
Rockstar Games was reportedly planning remasters of GTA 4 and Red Dead Redemption before changing its mind. Rockstar stated earlier this month that it has been "steadily shifting more development resources" to the next GTA game over the last few years, which is why updates for Red Dead Online in particular will slow down.
