Sony has announced that the PS5 price will be increased in several markets, including the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, and Canada. The new price is as much as 10% higher in Europe, where the PS5 will become even more difficult to obtain. Sony has not commented on the PlayStation 5 price in India but has stated that the retail price will rise in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, among other places.
The price increase is a result of the current global economic environment, which includes "high global inflation rates" and "negative currency trends." According to Jim Ryan, President, and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, both of these factors, among others, are influencing consumers and putting pressure on many industries.
"In light of these challenging economic conditions," he said, "SIE has made the difficult decision to raise the recommended retail price (RRP) of PlayStation 5 in select markets across Europe, the Middle East, Africa (EMEA), Asia-Pacific (APAC), Latin America (LATAM), and Canada."
However, PS5 buyers in the United States are in luck because the price increase does not apply to them. "In the United States, there will be no price increases." While Ray has not mentioned India, it is likely that prices will rise at some point.
While Sony has increased the price of the PS5 in its priority countries, availability remains a major concern. Since its release, the PS5 has been offered in limited quantities that sell out quickly. But Ray is optimistic that things will improve shortly. "Our primary focus is fixing the PS5 supply situation so that as many players as possible can experience everything PS5 has to offer and what is yet to come," he stated.
