Grand Theft Auto VI, the next game from Rockstar, will have a female protagonist for the first time that players may control.
According to those acquainted with the project, Rockstar's upcoming game, Grand Theft Auto 6, will have a female protagonist for the first time. The article, which primarily focuses on changes in Rockstar Games' internal production culture, makes this claim. The woman will allegedly be "Latina" and "one of a pair of major characters in a narrative inspired by bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde," according to the statement. It is unclear from the article whether or not this second character will also be playable or what gender she is.
The Bloomberg story also purports to provide other information, such as that GTA 6—or whatever game ends up being called—was formerly known under the codename "Project Americas" and has been under development since 2014. The game's original ideas "asked for the incorporation of areas modeled after enormous portions of North and South America." The intended focus of the game was "a fictitious depiction of Miami and its surrounding environs," but the developer has "reeled in those aspirations."
Furthermore, according to the source, GTA 6 would be published in a manner similar to that of live-service games such as Destiny, with Rockstar intending to "continually update the game over time, introducing new missions and towns on a regular basis." This, according to Rockstar's management, "will result in less crunch during the game's ultimate release." Even in its shortened version, GTA 6 will reportedly include "more indoor locales than prior Grand Theft Auto games."
Given the flak Rockstar has received for not including any playable female characters in any of their games over the previous decade (if not longer), the addition of one in GTA 6 is not entirely shocking. Nonetheless, if Bloomberg's reporting is correct, it would be very welcome news.
